| Available as an add-on to any of our Self-Guided Adventures, the Shimoda Extension takes you to a Japan of clear blue seas and golden sands. This laid back resort area is only a couple of hours from Tokyo and will make for a fantastic addition to any trip to Japan.

Day 1: Travel from Tokyo to Shimoda
Swap the skyscrapers for palm trees as you ride the direct train to the bottom of the Izu Peninsular. In just under three hours you will arrive in the historical port town of Shimoda and from the station you will pick up your pre-arranged hire car. It is only a short drive to your beach side accommodation. Driving is the idea way to explore the dramatic coastline and gives you complete freedom. Dinner is included each evening at your accommodation.

Day 2-4: Shimoda
Shimoda has a lot to offer and with the beach on your doorstep you can do as much or as little as you wish. As well as just chilling out on the beach you can continue the water theme by soaking in one of the great hot spring baths in the area. If you are feeling a little more active then why not hire a board and ride the surf or take a hike through some of the lush forests. Not only a beach resort, Shimoda is also steeped in history being the arrival port of the Black Ships, captained by Commodore Perry when he forced Japan to open its doors to the west after 200 years of seclusion. The coastline is simply breathtaking and it is well worth exploring the rest of the peninsular by car or boat.

Day 5: Travel from Shimoda to Tokyo
Taking your hire car back to the station you will then take the direct train back to Tokyo. Tonight you will be staying in the exciting Shinjuku district which is full of bright lights and fantastic shopping.
